FAQ

About The Grains And Making The First Batch

1. What is the difference between milk grains and water grains?
Milk grains are used for fermenting milk while water grains are for fermenting a sugary water solution.

2. What should I do once I have received the grains?
You can follow the instructions attached with the grains you receive and make your first batch right away. If you are not making it yet, just place the grains in either milk (about 100ml of milk) or sugary water (1 tablespoon of brown sugar in about 100ml of water) in the fridge. You can keep them for a few days until you are ready to make them.

3. Will the grains be all right if I don't ferment them straight away?
Yes, they are fine.

4. Do I need to rinse the grains before fermenting them?
Not absolutely necessary but you can rinse the water grains with clean water and the milk grains with some milk if you wish.

5. Do I follow the recipe for making kefir exactly?
The instructions are just a guide. Sometimes due to shipping, the grains might be a bit sluggish and takes more time to re-activate, in which case, you just ferment for longer hours.

6. How do I store the grains when I'm not using them?
For a few days, you can place the grains in either milk (about 100ml of milk) or sugary water (1 tablespoon of brown sugar in about 100ml of water) in the fridge. Change this once a week.

About The Readymade Kefir Products

1. What is the difference between milk kefir and water kefir?
Milk kefir tastes like thick drinkable yogurt while water kefir taste more like a soda drink. Both contains beneficial bacteria and yeasts. However, you have the different nutrition found in milk and the different type of sugars you may use.

2. How long can the products last?
As they contain live bacteria, fermentation is ongoing. As such, you might experience some changes in taste from when you first kept them. Depending on how cold your fridge is, they can keep well for at least a week and best consumed within this period. However, they can be consumed even after 2 or 3 weeks.

3. Do I have to refrigerate the milk kefir and water kefir?
Yes. But if you would like them at room temperature, just take them out for a couple of hours.

4. The milk kefir has separated into two layers, is this normal?
Yes, this is perfectly normal. The secondary fermentation is ongoing (since there are live kefir microbes in it). Just give the bottle a good shake before you pour it out

5. How much kefir should I consume a day?
There is no hard and fast rule. Most people consume between half a glass up to two glasses a day either morning or evening

6. I plan to give this to my dog. How much should I give?
You can give one or two tablespoons a day to your pet. It is great for their allergies and skin problems too
